Drop D Tuning
Drop D Tuning is a way to get a
deeper more powerful sound out of your guitar. Drop D Tuning
is used by most Rock-n-Roll artists, especially Heavy Metal
and Alternative bands.
Lets assume your guitar is in
standard tuning. If you are not yet able to tune it by
ear, use a guitar tuner. If you don't have one, you should
get one. It's a good idea to tune your guitar every time you
play it. After you have tuned your guitar, tune the low E
string to the open D string. You may do this by ear, or with
your tuner.
E||----------------||
B||----------------||
G||----------------||
D||---0------------||
A||----------------||
E||-------0--------|| <- Tune Down
An even easier way is to tune the
7th fret of the E string to an A. This will tune the E
string to a D.
E||----------------||
B||----------------||
G||----------------||
D||----------------||
A||--0-------------||
E||-------7--------|| <- Tune Down
You'll now notice that your guitar
sounds a lot more heavier, deeper and more powerful. If you
like this kind of sound, you may also want to try tuning the
5th string (A) to a G. (open 3rd string)
E||----------------||
B||----------------||
G||---0------------||
D||----------------||
A||-------0--------|| <- Tune Down
E||----------------||
Or, tune the 7th fret of the A
string to the open D string, making the A string now a G.
E||----------------||
B||----------------||
G||----------------||
D||--0-------------||
A||-------7--------|| <- Tune Down
E||----------------||
Trying these different tunings may
inspire you to play different sounds and styles. Have fun
with it.
